How can benign parathyroid adenoma be treated?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My mother, who is now in her 70s, has been diagnosed with excessively high parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels and a benign parathyroid adenoma. How urgent is her care? Blood tests have shown that her calcium levels are modest and within the normal range, but her PTH has increased by 5 points over the last 5 months. The tumor is 8 mm in diameter, and she suffers from osteopenia. She is currently taking 1000 mg of Curcumin Phytosome supplements daily, along with milk thistle capsules. Her test results are as follows:
Calcium: 9.3
Vitamin D: 45.3
PTH: 76.1
What are some alternative treatments to surgery? What potential complications should we be aware of? And how urgent is the need for treatment?
Kindly help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and understand your concern.
I am truly sorry to hear about your medical condition, and I am glad that you are paying close attention to the changes in your body. Please do not worry, I am here to take care of you.
Based on your symptoms, I strongly believe your mother may have primary hyperparathyroidism (a condition caused by overactive parathyroid glands, leading to excessive production of parathyroid hormone and elevated calcium levels in the blood)caused by a parathyroid adenoma, a benign tumor that increases calcium levels in the blood, affecting the bones, brain, and intestines. There are non-surgical options available in place of an operative procedure. These include the following medications:
Cinacalcet: 2 tablets orally once a day for one month.
Vitamin D supplement (1000mg): 1 capsule orally once a day for one month.
Alendronate (500mg): 1 tablet orally once a day for one month.
Additionally, please ensure she drinks plenty of water, consumes a lot of fruits and vegetables, and maintains regular exercise.
If you have any more concerns or questions, feel free to schedule a direct appointment or follow up via chat, phone, or video consultation.
I hope that you get your answer.
Please let me know if you want some help.
Thank you.
