Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My cousin was just told he has type 1 diabetes, and it is making me really scared for him. Is T1D as serious as it sounds? I do not know much about it, but I am worried about what this means for his future. I heard that diabetes can be hereditary, so does that mean others in the family could get it too? I cannot stop thinking about how this will change his life. What can we do to support him? This is all so overwhelming, and I do not know where to start. How do people deal with such a diagnosis? I am really lost right now and need some guidance.
Please help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
Type 1 diabetes is usually hereditary. You can confirm the diagnosis with blood tests for anti-GAD antibodies, islet cell antibodies and zinc transporter antibodies. You can also confirm this by fasting insulin and c peptide levels in the blood. It is managed by insulin. It is easier to handle and not a dreadful disease.
I hope this has helped you. Please feel free to reach me again, in case of further queries.
Thank you.
