Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am going through a tough time. I have type 2 diabetes, and my 11-year-old daughter was just diagnosed with type 1. My blood sugar is high, and I am struggling to manage it. I want to improve my health to set a good example for her since she is so young. Can you advise on how we can tackle this as a family? I feel overwhelmed and guilty. Did my bad habits contribute to her condition?
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I can understand your concern.
Managing your diabetes and supporting your daughter can be done by the following measures:
Type 1 diabetes affects how the body produces insulin, and it is not caused by your lifestyle choices. To manage your type 2 diabetes, team up with your healthcare provider to create a plan. Keep track of your blood sugar levels and eat a balanced diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Try to exercise for at least 30 minutes most days and use stress-relief techniques like meditation or deep breathing.
To support your daughter, learn about type 1 diabetes together and help her understand how to manage it. Encourage her to develop skills for independence while offering emotional support through the challenges. Involve the whole family in learning about diabetes, and consider joining support groups to connect with others facing similar situations. Remember, you are not alone, and with teamwork and support, you can both navigate this journey together.
I hope that you got your answer.
Get well soon.
