How can my son with T1D prioritize his health in college?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My 22-year-old son was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, and he’s been having a tough time staying consistent with his treatment. As a busy college student juggling classes and other responsibilities, he finds it difficult to stay on top of his insulin schedule and regularly monitor his blood sugar levels.

We’re really concerned because his insulin use has been inconsistent, and he’s not checking his glucose as often as he should. Despite several conversations and education about the risks of poor diabetes control, he’s still struggling to make his health a priority.

We’ve noticed mood swings, fluctuating energy levels, and signs of emotional stress that seem related to his condition. He’s mentioned feeling overwhelmed by the constant need for medical management and sometimes feels isolated or different from his peers because of it.

Could you please suggest some strategies to help improve his medication adherence and help him understand just how critical consistent diabetes care is for his long-term health?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

It’s important to encourage your son to be open about the challenges he’s facing with his diabetes treatment. Let him know that good management will benefit him in the long run.

1. Using reminders or diabetes apps can make it easier to stay on schedule with insulin and blood sugar checks.

2. Simplifying his routine by packing insulin and supplies in advance for the day.

3. Getting him more involved in his healthcare decisions and setting small, realistic goals may boost his motivation.

4. Support groups can also be incredibly helpful; they give him a chance to hear from others facing similar challenges and learn real-world strategies that work.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reach out with any more questions.

Thank you.
