Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My 32-year-old sister was recently diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and is three months pregnant. She is worried about managing her blood sugar levels and is worried whether it will cause any harm to her or the baby. What precautions should she take during pregnancy? Should she adjust her insulin or diet? How often should she check her glucose and see her doctor?
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I can understand your concern.
Managing type 1 diabetes during pregnancy requires regular blood sugar monitoring to keep levels within target ranges that is, fasting 70–95 mg/dL, one-hour post-meal 110–140 mg/dL, or two-hour post-meal 100–120 mg/dL. Hypoglycemia awareness is crucial, as symptoms may be harder to detect. Insulin doses often need adjustments due to increased resistance.
Consulting a dietitian for a pregnancy-specific meal plan is recommended. Regular antenatal checks are essential, including nuchal translucency, fetal anomaly, and growth scans. Monitoring eye and kidney function is also important. Delivery timing will depend on individual health status.
I hope you got an answer.
Please let me know if you need any further help.
Thank you.
