How can I balance my carbs to stabilize my blood sugar?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I’m a 52-year-old male with type 2 diabetes, and I’ve been having trouble keeping my blood sugar levels stable, even though I’m following my treatment plan. I’m starting to wonder if my daily carbohydrate intake is playing a bigger role than I thought. I do my best to watch what I eat, but my glucose readings are still all over the place. Could you please advise me on how to better manage my carb intake to help improve my blood sugar control?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Managing carbohydrate intake is crucial for controlling blood sugar levels in type 2 diabetes. Carbohydrates have the greatest impact on blood glucose because they break down into sugar during digestion. Even if you're following your treatment plan, inconsistent blood sugar levels can occur if your carb intake isn't well-balanced.

To improve control:

  1. Distribute carbs evenly throughout the day. Avoid consuming large amounts in one meal, as this can lead to spikes and crashes in your blood sugar.
  2. Choose complex carbohydrates like whole grains, legumes, and non-starchy vegetables. These digest more slowly and lead to a gradual rise in blood sugar.
  3. Pair carbs with protein or healthy fats to help slow down sugar absorption and keep your glucose levels more stable.
  4. Track your intake using a food diary or carb-counting tools. Try to keep meals consistent in carbohydrate content.
  5. Use the glycemic index (GI) to choose lower GI foods, which tend to have a milder effect on blood sugar.

If your readings remain unpredictable, it may help to work with a registered dietitian. They can customize a meal plan and recommend adjustments to your medications based on your dietary habits, activity level, and blood glucose trends.

Also, focus on getting regular physical activity, maintaining good sleep habits, and managing stress through techniques like mindfulness or meditation.

I hope this has helped you.

Please feel free to reach me again in case of further queries.

Thank you.
