Why is my blood sugar high despite insulin post pregnancy?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

After my third pregnancy, I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, and it has been overwhelming. My blood sugars stay high despite 100 units of insulin, and I cannot lose the baby weight. Yeast infections will not go away, and my feet are swollen. My toddler keeps pulling off my continuous glucose monitor, and the night sweats leave the bed smelling like candy. I am struggling to manage everything and need better, more affordable solutions.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Your type 2 diabetes is affecting your life, and immediate action is needed. High blood sugar (300 to 400 mg/dL) despite insulin suggests insulin resistance, common after pregnancy. Night sweats and sweet-smelling breath may signal high ketones, which require urgent attention. Swollen feet could be due to uncontrolled glucose or circulation issues, and complications like diabetic nephropathy need to be checked.

Reassess your treatment plan with your doctor. Medications like GLP-1 receptor agonists (e.g., Semaglutide) or SGLT2 inhibitors (e.g., Empagliflozin) can help control blood sugar and reduce insulin resistance. Assistance programs can lower medication costs, and affordable insulin is available. For yeast infections, keep glucose controlled and use antifungal medicines. Consider stronger continuous glucose monitoring adhesives and seek support from a diabetes educator.

Please let me know if there is anything else that I can help you with.

Thank you.
