Can birth control pills cause a delay in periods?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I had unprotected sex and used the withdrawal method one week after ovulation. I took two birth control pills. It is my first time taking birth control actually, and I hope that is why causes my period's delay. I have been getting only white discharge. I did not get any spotting or pink discharge, and I have been stressed, anxious, depressed, and emotional. It has been 11 days since the last sex, and now I am in my day 33 cycle. I took a test today and it is negative. Please help.

Thanks.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

It seems you are concerned about a potential pregnancy and your period being delayed. Taking two birth control pills using the Yuzpe method, even though it is not the standard dosage, can still have some effect on your hormones. The stress, anxiety, and depression you have been experiencing can also impact your menstrual cycle.

A negative pregnancy test is an encouraging sign, but it is essential to wait for your period to arrive to be sure. If your period is significantly delayed beyond what is normal for you, or if you experience any unusual symptoms, it is best to consult a gynecologist.

In the future, it is crucial to use reliable contraceptive methods like condoms and consider discussing long-term birth control options with your partner and a healthcare provider to find the best solution for you both. Communication and planning can help prevent such situations and ensure your sexual health.

I hope this information will help you.

Thanks.
