Can pre-ejaculate fluid cause pregnancy?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My girlfriend and I were having anal sex. I was also wearing a condom. In between, the condom got broken. I did not ejaculate inside the condom, and only pre-ejaculate was there. We got worried that this pre-ejaculate can flow down and can go through the vagina and cause pregnancy. Her last period was a month and eight days back. We did this today. Is there any chance of pregnancy? Please advise.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern. Well, I am deeply concerned about your worries. Let me explain to you the process of getting pregnant. There should be intercourse between men and women. At least there should be penetration of the penis into the vagina; however, if you are sure that you have not done vaginal sex, but you have done anal sex then I assure you that there is no chance that pregnancy will take place. But if you have done unprotected vaginal intercourse irrespective of whether you ejaculated or not then pregnancy can happen. If her last period was a month and eight days back, so wait till the same day. After that, we cannot say it is an absent menstrual cycle or irregular menstrual bleeding. Let me explain to you the FIGO (Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics) of menstrual bleeding.

Frequency:

Frequent cycle is when the cycle is 24 to 38 days. Frequent cycle is when the cycle is less than 24 days. An infrequent or irregular cycle is when the cycle is more than 38 days. Amenorrhea is the absence of the menstrual cycle.

Duration:

The normal duration is eight days. The prolonged duration is more than eight days.

Regularity:

A regular cycle is when the shortest and longest cycle is 9 to 10 days. The irregular cycle is when the shortest and longest cycle is more than 10 days.

Flow:

Normal, heavy, and light.

According to your history, she is in a normal cycle, if there is a delay of more than 38 days, it is infrequent. And I want to assure you that peri-anal sex does not cause pregnancy. Do not worry about it. I hope I made it clear to you. If you have further queries please do not hesitate to contact me. I would appreciate it if you can give your feedback.

I hope this helps.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you and take care.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

We used protection, but as lubrication was less on the anal side, the condom got broken. She is also sure that my penis did not reach her vagina, but the concern we have is whether this pre-ejaculate can flow down and get inside the vagina and cause pregnancy. We did this thinking that today was a safe day as her period was a month and eight days back. Please advise.

Thank you.

I read your query and can understand your concern. Well, I am deeply concerned about your worries. If you have not done any penetration of the penis into the vagina, then there is no chance of pregnancy. I assure you do not worry about anything. Do a pregnancy test after a month. If pregnancy becomes positive we will handle it. I can assure you that if you have not done any penetration of the vagina, then there is no chance, but if you have done penetration, then pregnancy can occur. I hope I made it clear to you.
