Can pregnancy risk be high during the ovulation phase?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

After masturbation, the guy had sperm on his hands, but then he washed his hands twice with soap and started masturbating to a girl who was ovulating (at the same time, his fingers entered the vagina by 1 to 2 cm). What is the risk of pregnancy, and should I use emergency contraception if three days have passed?

Please suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

The risk of pregnancy in this scenario is extremely low to nearly zero for the following reasons:

Sperm does not survive well outside the body

Once sperm is exposed to air, it begins to dry out and die quickly. Even if some sperm remained on the hands, washing twice with soap would effectively remove or kill them.

No direct ejaculation near the vagina

Pregnancy usually requires live sperm being ejaculated inside the vagina or very close to it. Sperm on fingers, especially after washing, is not a reliable way for pregnancy to occur.

Do you need emergency contraception?

Since three days have passed, the most effective emergency contraception (Plan B) is still an option but likely unnecessary in your case. Ella (Ulipristal Acetate) is a stronger emergency contraceptive that works up to five days after unprotected sex if you are still concerned.

What you can do next:

If you are still worried, take a pregnancy test in two to three weeks to be sure. Consider using regular contraception (pills, condoms, or an IUD (intrauterine device)) to avoid stress in the future.

I hope this helps.

Thank you and take care.
