Can you get pregnant after taking Plan B post unprotected sex?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had unprotected sex with my boyfriend, but he pulled out and did not ejaculate inside me. I took Plan B earlier this month and got my periods then. What are the chances that I could be pregnant?

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I went through your query and can understand your concern.

Even though your boyfriend pulled out during unprotected sex, there is still a slight chance of pregnancy, as pre-ejaculate (pre-cum) can sometimes contain sperm. However, the risk is relatively low if he does not ejaculate inside you.

Since you took Plan B (Levonorgestrel) earlier this month, it is important to know that emergency contraception can temporarily affect your menstrual cycle, causing irregular periods, spotting, or other changes. The fact that you got your period is a good sign that you are likely not pregnant from the earlier encounter.

However, if you had unprotected sex after your period, there is still a potential risk, depending on where you are in your cycle.

Key factors to consider:

1. Timing: If unprotected sex occurs after your period, especially near your ovulation days, the risk of pregnancy increases slightly.

2. Plan B effects: Plan B can cause cycle irregularities, making it harder to predict when ovulation will occur, which may affect the risk.

If you are concerned, taking a pregnancy test 10 to 14 days after unprotected sex will give you a clearer answer. It may also be worth considering a more regular form of contraception to prevent this worry in the future.

I hope this helps.

Thanks and regards.
