Could there be at risk of pregnancy after unprotected intercourse post-ovulation?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I engaged in a brief episode of unprotected intercourse lasting around two to three seconds, during which there was no ejaculation but a small amount of precum was present. This incident took place a few days after the completion of my estimated ovulation period. My menstrual cycle is irregular with an average duration of 35 days. I am interested in understanding the potential risk of pregnancy associated with this situation. Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for your query.

Pregnancy is possible, although the chances are low, as precum may contain a small number of sperm. Pregnancy occurs through the introduction of precum or semen into the vagina. To determine pregnancy, you can conduct a urine pregnancy test (UPT) from the first day of your missed period. If your next period date is unknown, take the test at least 10 days after your last unprotected intercourse. Monitor the onset of menstruation. If menstruation does not occur after more than 10 days, take a urine pregnancy test. If it is negative, consider a beta hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) test. If necessary, visit a gynecology clinic.

I hope this information helps you. Feel free to reach out if you have any further questions.

Thank you.
