Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am an 18-year-old girl. I lost my virginity almost a week ago. He says he ejaculated inside of me, so I took a Plan B (Levonorgestrel) pill the next day. When we had intercourse, I did bleed, and based on the research that I did, it is because I ripped my hymen.
Over the past two days, I have had a kind of itchy feeling down there, and I am not sure if it is normal due to the tear or if I need an antibiotic.
Please help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome back to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
Bleeding during first-time intercourse is common and often results from a hymen tear or minor vaginal irritation, particularly if there was insufficient lubrication.
While mild itching can occur as the tissue heals, persistent or worsening itching, especially when accompanied by discharge, burning, redness, or a foul odor, may suggest a yeast infection or bacterial imbalance requiring treatment.
Additionally, taking Plan B (Levonorgestrel) pill can temporarily disrupt your hormone levels and vaginal flora, which may contribute to irritation or spotting. For now, keep the area clean, wear breathable cotton underwear, and avoid tight clothing, scented soaps, or douching.
If symptoms worsen, consult a healthcare provider for a swab test to rule out infection; antibiotics are typically only necessary if a bacterial cause is confirmed. Finally, consider scheduling a follow-up for STI (sexually transmitted infections) screening and long-term contraceptive counseling, even though the Plan B (Levonorgestrel) pill was taken.
I hope this helps.
Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.
Thank you.
