What are the chances of pregnancy from anal sex?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had unprotected anal sex with my girlfriend four months ago, on the last day of her period. Now, she is experiencing certain symptoms but does not have bloating or acidity. Could she be pregnant?

Kindly suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Since you had unprotected anal sex, the risk of pregnancy is generally very low unless semen came into contact with her vagina. Pregnancy occurs when sperm fertilizes an egg, which typically requires direct contact with the vaginal area during ovulation. If there was no vaginal penetration or semen near the vagina, the chance of pregnancy is quite unlikely. The symptoms your girlfriend is experiencing could be related to other factors, such as hormonal changes, stress, or gastrointestinal issues. If you are still concerned about pregnancy, it is best to take a home pregnancy test after her next missed period to rule it out. For future peace of mind, consider using protection during any form of sexual activity to prevent unintended pregnancy and reduce the risk of infections.

I hope this helps.

Let me know if you have any other concerns.

Thank you.
