Is there a risk of pregnancy despite taking Unwanted 72?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My girlfriend took an Unwanted 72 pill three hours after we had sex. She usually gets her period on time. She has had mild bleeding for a few days. Is there a chance that she could be pregnant? What should my girlfriend do? Please help and let me know what steps we should take.

Please guide.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concerns.

I understand your concerns, and I want to reassure you. If she has her period, there is no chance of pregnancy, so there is no need to worry.

Abnormal uterine bleeding can be classified into several categories.

  1. Firstly, the absence of bleeding indicates no menstrual activity, while a normal cycle is characterized by lasting between 24 to 38 days. If the cycle occurs more frequently than every 24 days, it is considered frequent, whereas if it is longer than 38 days, it is classified as infrequent.

  2. Regarding the duration of the bleeding, a normal period lasts up to eight days, and anything extending beyond this is termed prolonged.

  3. In terms of regularity, a regular cycle has variations of less than nine days between the shortest and longest cycles, whereas an irregular cycle shows a variation of more than ten days.

It is typically not a major issue if the bleeding is less or irregular. I would recommend doing a pregnancy test after some time, though it is most likely to be negative, especially since the time of intercourse was during the secretory phase of the cycle, which has a lower chance of pregnancy. The chances of pregnancy are generally higher during the ovulatory phase.

I hope this answers your query. Feel free to reach out anytime.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for your response.

I am concerned because light bleeding can occur due to implantation in the uterine walls. This can happen 10 to 14 days after conception. Can light bleeding, also known as spotting, be a symptom of pregnancy?

Please guide.

Answered by Dr. Ali Osman

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I am deeply concerned about your worries. Implantation bleeding is light spotting, lasting one to three days, with pink or brown color, and without cramps. Period is heavier and more consistent bleeding that lasts three to seven days. It is bright or dark red and can involve more intense cramping. Do not worry, even if pregnancy becomes positive, we will solve it with do urine pregnancy test.

I hope this answers your doubts.

Thank you.
