How effective is Atezolizumab for metastatic urothelial carcinoma?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I was recently diagnosed with metastatic urothelial carcinoma, and my oncologist has recommended immunotherapy with Atezolizumab. I would like to understand how this drug works to target cancer cells and what kind of side effects I might experience. I have heard that immunotherapy can sometimes cause the immune system to attack healthy cells, how significant is this risk with Atezolizumab? I also want to know how effective it is, especially in cases where the cancer has already spread to other organs. What should I ask my doctor before starting this therapy?

Kindly help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Immunotherapy is the best option in metastatic urothelial cancer. It is effective with fewer side effects compared to chemotherapy and most of its side effects are manageable. The common side effects of immunotherapy are

  1. Fatigue is the most common side effect.
  2. Flu-like symptoms.
  3. Organ-related inflammation.
  4. Colitis.
  5. Skin rash.

Not everyone who receives immunotherapy experiences these side effects. Some patients should avoid immunotherapy including:

  1. Patients who are suffering from autoimmune diseases.
  2. Patients who have undergone solid organ transplants.
  3. People with suppressed immune systems.

Many side effects happen when the immune system that is revved up to act against the cancer also acts against healthy cells and tissues in the body.

Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further.

Thank you.
