Is it normal to feel a hard structure in the vagina?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a healthy female without any issues related to my reproductive health. I wanted to ask a very anatomical question that has been bothering me. During self-examination, when I insert a finger inside the vagina, I feel a hard structure almost as hard as a bone. I have never had intercourse. Is this normal?

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

I assume that your physique is quite thin, and the reason why you felt a bony bump may be the actual bone (which is the pelvic bone). When we are thin, the amount of fat is less there. If your period cycle is normal and there is no pain or swelling, then it is fine.

I hope this information helps provide some insight into your symptoms.

Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any further questions or concerns.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for your quick reply.

I weigh around 116.84 to 119.05 pounds. Is this normal? I mean I am quite confused about how sexual intercourse could happen if there is something so hard inside the vagina. Please advise.

Thank you.

Hello,

Glad to have you back!

I am here to help you get the best medical advice.

Having a sexual intercourse requires an emotional and physical involvement. There is a gush of happy hormones released, which relaxes the muscles in all and favors the process. A vaginal opening is a closed opening altogether. It has some resistance in the initial times but that is fine. After the initial times of physical relation, everything will start going on smoothly. If not, you can think of an evaluation later.

I hope this information helps provide some insight into your symptoms.

Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any further questions or concerns.

Thank you.
