Will vaginal dryness cause any major issues if ignored?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 31-year-old woman. I have been experiencing severe vaginal dryness for the past few months, and it is causing me a lot of distress. It is affecting my intimate relationship with my partner. Sometimes it causes pain during intercourse due to dryness.

  1. Will this cause any major issues if ignored?

  2. Can you please offer some guidance on what might be causing this and what steps I can take to address this issue?

I somehow wanted to get out of it.

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Vaginal secretion during sex is affected by several things.

  1. Inadequate foreplay before vaginal penetration.

  2. Vaginitis (a local infection in the vagina) occasionally causes vaginal dryness.

  3. Some medications, like contraceptives, occasionally cause dryness.

  4. Fall in estrogen in the body as a result of menopause (this should be your case as you are still of reproductive age).

The most likely cause of your dryness is either of the first three. Did you take any medication or start any medication before you started experiencing the dryness?

For now, ensure adequate foreplay before penetration; check treatments for the prescription to treat any underlying vaginitis; and

I suggest you use

  1. Vaginal lubricant for sex for the next two weeks while you treat.

  2. The Clindamycin (Lincomycin antibiotics) and Clotrimazole (Imidazole) combination vaginal suppositories should be pushed to the upper part of the vagina at night for 12 days.

Kindly consult a specialist, discuss with them, and start taking the medications with their consent.

Revert with the answer to assist further.

Thank you and take care.

Regards.

Treatment plan

Clindamycin+Clotrimazole vaginal suppositories I insert into the vagina at night for 12 days.
