I am 24. How do I manage vaginal irritation and bloating?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am a 24-year-old female, and I have not been feeling well for the past few days. I have been experiencing severe vaginal itching, severe bloating, purging, watery stool, and pain during vaginal penetration. I have general body weakness, which is occasional, and headaches now and then. I even have sores in my tongue.
Also, my menstrual cycle has been a bit off lately, from 25 to 27 to 28-31 days recently, and it is already one day late again this month. I have constipation now, and purging later leads to another round of constipation.
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com
I read your query and understand your concern.
Your symptoms, like vaginal itching, painful intercourse, tongue sores, bloating, alternating constipation/loose stools, weakness, and delayed period, suggest that multiple things are going on together. The vaginal itching and pain with penetration point more towards a vaginal infection (yeast or mixed infection).
The bowel changes (purging/constipation) with bloating could be a separate gut issue, but sometimes systemic conditions like nutritional deficiencies or even low immunity can link both. Tongue sores suggest either a vitamin deficiency (B12, folate, iron) or a recurrent fungal/viral cause. Headaches and weakness can also be tied to anemia or a vitamin deficiency.
Hormonal imbalance can also lead to cycle length variation. Your gut disturbances could be an IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) -like pattern or post-infectious colitis.
I would suggest that you undergo the following investigations:
Vaginal swab for microscopy and culture.
CBC (complete blood count), serum ferritin, B12, folate.
Thyroid profile.
Pelvic ultrasound to check the uterus and ovaries.
Stool routine and culture.
At this stage, avoid self-medication. The first step is to confirm infection with a swab. Probiotics (oral and vaginal) help in both gut and vaginal health. Maintain hygiene, keep the vaginal area dry, and avoid scented soaps and washes. A multivitamin and iron-rich diet can help with sores and weakness until tests confirm. If the swab confirms yeast or bacterial infection, targeted antifungal/antibiotic vaginal treatment will be needed (to be prescribed after culture report).
Please get the vaginal swab and blood tests done and update me. That will narrow the diagnosis and guide exact medicines. If bleeding delay continues beyond 7 days, do a urine pregnancy test as well.
Do follow-up here with reports so we can plan treatment precisely. Follow the preventive measures, like:
Consume a balanced diet, iron-rich food, and plenty of fluids.
Safe sex practices, both partners may need treatment if the infection is confirmed.
Regular cycle tracking.
Stress and sleep regulation (as they also disturb the gut and periods).
I hope this helps.
Thank you.
