It is one of the most common causes of fainting. There is a sudden drop in the heart rate and blood pressure upon the trigger, which causes a reduced blood supply to the brain, causing a brief loss of consciousness. Triggers include sight of blood, emotional distress, extended periods of standing, the sight of an accident or bodily damages, strained bowel movements, etc. Vasovagal syncope is usually harmless, and consciousness is restored within minutes without any treatment.
