Why is VeinGogh treatment not utilized for a cosmetic purpose in the eye's sclera?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I wonder why the Vein Gogh treatment has not been utilized for cosmetic purposes in the sclera of the eye (telangiectasia of the sclera). I have no health problems. I have seen an ophthalmologist, and he said my eyes were in perfect health. However, he did not know anything about the VeinGogh treatment for the sclera of the eyes.

These permanently red veins appeared after I was treated with steroid eye drops during a bacterial contact lens infection. Previously, my sclerae were perfectly white. I have heard of the dangers of I-Brite surgery and would not opt for this kind of surgery with the dangers involved.

However, the Vein Gogh treatment is safe, and I wonder why ophthalmologists have not tried this treatment to remove red veins on the eye's sclera for cosmetic purposes.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Vein Gogh treatment is done for dilated vessels over the skin, but not for eye vessels. Vein Gogh treatment involves applying heat to break and cause the shrinkage of the dilated blood vessel. This is not done in the eyes because of the side effects of rising temperature caused by applying heat.

The vessels of the eye are required for blood supply, and loss of blood vessels will lead to the development of ischemia and further complications. Hence, this treatment is not tried for eye vessels because of these complications.

All cases with telangiectasia of the vessels are evaluated to find the underlying cause, like chronic inflammation of the sclera or sometimes tumors of the underlying structures, like the ciliary body. Since your ophthalmologist has checked your eyes and told you they are normal, you need not worry.

If they increase, it is advisable to undergo an ultrasound examination of the eye or B scan to find any of these conditions.

I hope that this answers your query.

Kindly follow up if you have more doubts.

Thank you.
