What causes pupil non-reactivity and peripheral vision loss?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am experiencing peripheral vision loss, which appears to be damaged. An ophthalmology evaluation did not reveal any abnormalities, despite ongoing visual symptoms. My pupils are not reacting to light and do not appear to move normally.

I have also been experiencing intermittent cognitive difficulties. I am currently taking iron and vitamin D supplements. These symptoms have been present for approximately three months. I attempted several home remedies, including cucumber and potato slices and the use of ice packs; however, there was no improvement, and the use of approximately five ice packs resulted in damage and rupture to the eyelid tissue.

Please help me, as I am experiencing vision loss.

Thank you very much for your guidance.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Thank you for sharing your concerns. Since your pupils are not responding to light or movement, and you are experiencing peripheral vision loss that has persisted for three months despite home remedies, this is a serious issue that requires prompt and thorough evaluation. The changes in pupil response and vision may indicate potential neurological or optic nerve involvement, which might not be detected during a routine eye exam.

I strongly recommend comprehensive testing, including visual field assessment, pupil function evaluation, and neuroimaging such as an MRI of the brain and orbits, to determine any underlying causes like optic neuritis, nerve damage, or other neurological conditions. Please avoid using ice packs or other home remedies on your eyelids, as these can harm the tissue.

It is important to seek specialist care from a neurologist as soon as possible to prevent further vision loss and address any potential brain involvement. Early diagnosis and treatment are critical in ensuring the best possible outcome.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
