What is the treatment for visual snow syndrome at 20?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 18 years old, and for about five months, I have been experiencing constant visual snow. I still have 20/20 vision, as confirmed by a doctor. It is worse in the dark, and I do not notice it as much during the day, but it is always there. I have some pretty bad habits.

I do not eat much, I hardly drink water, I do not exercise regularly, I rarely go outside, and I spend over five hours a day looking at screens, both at school and at home. I also often use screens in the dark. I have had these habits for over a year, and I have had no vision issues.

My vision was perfect. Then, out of nowhere, I suddenly developed this grainy, snowlike visual effect, and it has only become more noticeable since. I have also struggled with very severe anxiety my entire life. I am scared it might be visual snow syndrome, but I am not sure if it is just something caused by my lifestyle habits, which have not changed.

I do not suffer from migraines, I am not on any medications, I have blue eyes, and I am male.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

I am very sorry about your medical condition, and I am glad that you are paying attention to changes in your body's system. Regarding your symptoms, I strongly believe you have developed a night visual impairment, possibly due to the low content of melatonin in your eyes that was tempered by continuing exposure to a light screen.

Please stop or reduce excess exposure to light rays and take the following:

  1. One tablet of vitamin A 1000 IU (International units) orally once a day for one month.

  2. One capsule of cod liver oil 1000 mg (milligrams) orally once a day for one month.

I hope this helps.

Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.

Thank you.
