What causes recurrent morning vomiting and weight loss?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I have gut issues that make me vomit every morning, and I am not able to eat. I throw up if I eat anything in the morning, and I am also losing weight. There was a slight sign of an ulcer in the investigation. This case has occurred before, and now it has appeared again. It has been more than a week.
Kindly help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and understood your concern.
These could be due to:
Stomach or duodenal ulcer: Ulcers can cause early-morning or empty-stomach nausea and vomiting, which are associated mostly with Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection and with some medicines like nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
Gastritis or severe acid reflux.
Gastric outlet obstruction from ulcer scarring: This condition requires urgent medical evaluation.
Functional or motility disorder.
I suggest the following investigations:
Since your symptoms are chronic and recurring, please see a gastroenterologist soon, who will advise:
Upper gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy to check for ulcers, gastritis, or obstruction.
Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) test, including stool antigen test or urea breath test.
Abdominal ultrasound to assess the gallbladder, pancreas, and stomach.
Basic blood tests: Complete blood count (CBC), electrolytes, and liver function tests.
I suggest you follow this treatment plan until you consult your doctor:
Proton pump inhibitor (PPI) such as Omeprazole, Pantoprazole, or Esomeprazole, usually taken before breakfast.
Avoid NSAID painkillers like Ibuprofen, Diclofenac, and Aspirin.
Eat small, soft, bland meals such as porridge, bananas, and boiled rice. Avoid spicy, oily, or acidic foods.
Hydrate well with small sips of electrolyte solution or coconut water.
Avoid lying down immediately after eating.
I hope that this answers your query.
Kindly follow up if you have more doubts.
Thank you.
