How to balance sodium creatine in a 64-year-old female?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My mother is 64 years old suffering from diabetes for the last 15 years. She had a major heart attack one year back. She has been facing a water retention problem. On the doctor's advice, I have done her RFT test. In this sodium creatine was 2.2 and blood urea was 95. In this case, we need your opinion on how we can balance sodium creatine and water retention problem. I need your help to give us a diet chart that helps her to balance her creatine level.

Kindly help.

Hello doctor,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

There are 2 things involved. Heart and kidneys. There is every possibility that your mother might be having left ventricular failure (LVF) secondary to a heart attack. Kidneys can be involved in diabetes of long standing especially if it is not properly controlled. Also provide urine reports for microalbumin, protein, RBCs, etc. Edema is because of LVF. It can be treated with the use of diuretics. I am sure your doctor might have prescribed this. For diet, reduce salt intake and high protein diets. Rest will follow the routine as suggested for diabetics.

I hope this helps.
