How to manage itchy white patches around my mouth and chin?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have had itchy white patches around my mouth and chin for about one week. It itches and sometimes feels slightly irritated. I tried using a moisturizer, aloe vera, Boroline, and a sunscreen, but it did not improve. What should I do?

Kindly advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

The condition and discomfort are completely understandable. Itchy white patches around the mouth and chin for one week can have several possible causes, such as contact dermatitis, early fungal infection, perioral dermatitis, or post-inflammatory dryness.

The exact diagnosis depends greatly on the clinical appearance of the skin. Since there has been no improvement with the use of moisturizers, aloe vera, petroleum jelly, or a sunscreen, a visual examination is essential to guide appropriate treatment.

Clear photographs of the affected area are requested. The images should be taken in good natural light and from a close distance so that the pattern, borders, color, and surface changes can be properly assessed. After reviewing the images, a more accurate diagnosis and suitable management plan can be suggested, as the treatment for each of these conditions is different, and treatment for one condition may worsen another.

In the meantime, Cetirizine hydrochloride tablet 10 milligrams may be taken once daily at bedtime, or twice daily in cases of severe itching. Self-medication and application of topical steroid creams should be avoided. Only a bland emollient such as petroleum jelly or a gentle, fragrance-free, sensitive skin moisturizer should be applied to the affected area.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.

Thank you.
