What are the effective strategies for managing whooping cough?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am worried about my nephew's health. He is seven years old and has been experiencing whooping cough for the past few weeks. His mother informs us that this cough recurs every season. He does not eat or play well when he experiences these symptoms. He seems to be in trouble. Is there any medicine to completely treat this cough? Is there any vaccine available? Should he get tested? Is this anything serious, or can it be cured?

Please help me.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I am sorry to hear about your nephew's condition.

Whooping cough, also known as pertussis, is a respiratory infection caused by the bacterium Bordetella pertussis. It can indeed cause severe coughing spells that make it hard to breathe, eat, or play, especially in young children and infants. Complications can include pneumonia, seizures, and even death in rare cases, particularly in infants. Prompt treatment with antibiotics usually leads to recovery, although the cough can persist for weeks even after starting treatment. Antibiotics such as Azithromycin, Clarithromycin, or Erythromycin can be given to reduce the severity of symptoms. The DPT (diphtheria-pertussis-tetanus) vaccine is usually administered to children. Has he received it before?

It is important for your nephew to see a healthcare provider for a proper diagnosis and treatment. If he has not been vaccinated or is behind on his vaccinations, catching up on the recommended schedule is crucial. Encouraging vaccination of family members and close contacts (using the cocooning strategy) can help protect vulnerable individuals, such as young children, who are at higher risk for severe complications. Ensuring your nephew gets plenty of rest, fluids, and proper nutrition can help support his recovery and overall health.

I hope this information helps you. Feel free to ask further queries.

Thank you.
