Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am a 50-year-old male. I have heard that Zika fever is back in the picture. We were already cautioned about dengue illness on our schedule, and now I wonder if the same procedures will work with Zika. What special steps should I take to protect myself against the Zika virus? Are there any further actions beyond what we take for dengue? Also, given that I will be spending a lot of time outside, could you describe the symptoms and potential hazards of Zika?
Kindly suggest.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I just read your query and understand your concern.
To protect yourself from the Zika virus while traveling to India, particularly in places where it has been detected, use the same precautions as for dengue illness, but with some added considerations. Precautions for Zika virus include the following: Mosquito protection you can apply N, N-diethyl-meta-toluamide, picaridin, and lemon eucalyptus oil to exposed skin. Wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, socks, and hats to protect your skin as much as possible.
To keep mosquitoes at bay, make sure your living space is properly screened or air-conditioned. If your sleeping quarters are not well screened, utilize mosquito nets, especially if you sleep during the day, when Aedes mosquitoes are more active.
Avoid mosquito breeding sites to prevent mosquito breeding grounds, and remove any standing water from containers in your living space. Use larvicides on water storage containers that cannot be emptied.
Personal habits:
If using both sunscreen and insect repellent, apply sunscreen first and repellent second. Follow product instructions for reapplication, especially after swimming or sweating. Additional steps for Zika are to use condoms or abstain from sex, as Zika can be transmitted sexually. Women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant should avoid travel to areas with Zika outbreaks, as the virus can cause severe birth defects.
Symptoms of Zika infection include fever, rash, joint pain, conjunctivitis, and other general symptoms like headache, muscle pain, and malaise. Potential risks include birth defects and neurological complications. Given that you will be spending a fair amount of time outdoors, here are some additional tips to avoid outdoor activities during early morning and late afternoon when mosquitoes are most active. Consider using portable spatial repellents or coils to create a mosquito-free zone around outdoor areas. Stay vigilant for symptoms and seek medical attention if you experience any signs of illness.
I hope that you got your answer.
Regards.
