Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am ten days late of my menses. Since yesterday having abdominal pain, back ache, fever, nausea and two episodes of loose motions, what could be the cause? Am I pregnant?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern. First possibility is pregnancy for any case of sexually active lady with delayed periods. So do get an early morning urine pregnancy test. If you see two lines, proceed as needed. Progestrone hormone from the second half of cycle can cause symptoms as you have mentioned, such as raise in body temperature, bloated feeling, depression, mood swings, breast tingling or soreness, altered bowel movement. If temperature is < 100 F , it is not infection, so no need of antibiotics. This could be incidental gastroenteritis, you can have lots of water with salt and sugar, or ORS (oral rehydration salts). Now if you are not pregnant, this is an anovulatory cycle or cycle with no ovulation. To get periods, have any of the birth control pills or oral combined contraceptive pills, like tablet. Novelon or Ovral-G or Duoluton-L or Dear 21 or Intimacy plus 3, have one tablet twice a day for ten days (throw away the 21st pill). No matter what the cause is (except pregnancy) you will have periods within seven to ten days. Find out the cause of this no periods or no ovulation. Possibilities are sudden increase or decrease of weight. You are in the upper limit of weight range- maximum is 121 pounds. But if you have recently started taking lot of junk food or eating too much in odd hours, this cholesterol will convert into hormones and alter the periods by stopping ovulation. Avoid fasting, junk food, fast food, red meat and snacks in between meals. Have low calories food, high proteins. Regular exercise (especially for the waist and hip area), aerobics , yoga, brisk walking (swing your hands well) ,try to reduce two to four pounds. Do not hurry on weight reduction, it will be difficult to maintain. As soon as you reduce at least five pounds, you will see changes. Even if you are in normal weight range , try this schedule, it will help. I suggest taking a thyroid profile and serum prolactin blood test- early morning 6 to 9 am in empty stomach, will need correction if high. Did you take any recent hormone intake? Do you have any recent episode of anxiety, depression, extremes of happiness or sorrow. Kindly writeback to get a clear picture on your concern.

Thank you.
