Ranula is a cyst formed by a blocked salivary gland in the mouth. It is commonly found on the floor of the mouth and varies in size. If it is a simple one, it remains confined to the sublingual gland. Another type of ranula is called plunging ranula. It occurs when a simple ranula ruptures. But it also occurs due to trauma in the floor of the mouth. The other cause is unknown. It is treated by laser ablation and cryosurgery either alone or with marsupialization.
