Introduction

Respiration is an important physiological process. The purpose of the respiration is to exchange gases. It helps in the inhalation of oxygen and exhalation of toxic gases like carbon dioxide from the body. The main organ that helps in this process is the lungs. Different parts of the lungs fulfill different functions, such as carrying gas and exchanging gaseous substances. The anatomical and structural complexities of the lungs help in these processes. That is why maintaining lung health is important.

Different factors influence lung health. These factors are;

  1. Effect of Aging: Elderly individuals commonly face a decline in their lung functionality. Furthermore, they also experience a reduction in the overall volume capacity of their lungs and a shift in the ratio of residual volume to total lung capacity. The alveolar epithelium undergoes morphological changes, resulting in a mismatch between ventilation and perfusion. Several factors, including lung disorders, inadequate ventilation, limited air exchange in the alveoli, decreased mucociliary transport, weakened cough reflex, and decreased alveolar elasticity, contribute to an increased vulnerability to lung infections. Chronic lung disorders, such as emphysema and chronic obstructive pulmonary disorders, can ultimately lead to right-sided heart failure.

  2. Effect of Smoking and Pollution: The primary cause of lung disorders is smoking. All forms of smoking involve the intake of various carcinogenic substances. The smoke contains a variety of carcinogens, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), aromatic amines, N-nitrosamines, benzene, vinyl chloride, arsenic, and chromium. These substances lead to DNA damage and alterations in cellular metabolic processes. Additionally, occupational carcinogens like asbestos, beryllium, cadmium, bismuth, chloromethyl ethers, chromium, nickel, radon, silica, and vinyl chloride are linked to lung cancer. Furthermore, indoor pollution from smoke and outdoor pollution contribute to 17 percent of cancers in non-smokers. This type of pollution is commonly referred to as secondhand smoke pollution.

  3. Effect of Infections: Infectious lung diseases are caused by bacteria and viral infections. The host's pulmonary defense system is activated by the pathogen. If the host's defense is weakened or the pathogen is highly virulent, pneumonia may arise. Pathogens can disseminate through the bloodstream and macro-aspiration. The inflammatory response causes the recruitment of cells such as neutrophils, mast cells, and macrophages. This leads to inflammation of the lung tissue and promotes increased permeability of the capillary walls, leading to exudative congestion and pneumonia.
  4. Effect of Inflammatory Lung Disorders: Chronic inflammatory lung disorders like chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD), and asthma are associated with breathing difficulties. Chronic inflammation causes the narrowing of the respiratory tract and the destruction of the alveolar sac.

What Are the Impact of Exercise on the Lungs?

The effect of physical activity can be summarized in the following ways.

  1. During physical activity, the respiratory system undergoes adaptations by increasing both the rate and depth of breathing. This leads to increased ventilation to meet the heightened oxygen demands of the working muscles. This response showcases the remarkable ability of our body to adjust according to the specific needs of the situation. At the same time, other mechanisms also come into play. Blood vessels near the active muscles undergo vasodilation, which promotes enhanced blood flow and optimizes gas exchange at the capillary beds. Additionally, the heart rate accelerates to pump larger volumes of oxygenated blood throughout the body.

  2. Respiratory muscle training (RMT) focuses on enhancing the function of the respiratory muscles. These muscles consist of the diaphragm, intercostals, and accessory muscles of respiration, which play a crucial role in breathing. By strengthening and increasing the endurance of these muscles, such exercises can improve the intake of oxygen during physical activity and promote better respiratory health. There are several techniques to this exercise, which include breathing exercises, inspiratory and expiratory muscle training, and positive expiratory pressure (PEP) therapy. These techniques can be particularly beneficial for individuals with respiratory conditions like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or asthma.

Various types of exercises have numerous benefits on pulmonary health. These benefits are;

  1. The cardio exercises are the exercises that increase the cardiovascular activity. Such exercises include running, skipping, spot jumping, and swimming. These exercises are known for increasing heart rate and vascular flow rate. As a result, the oxygen demand in the body. Due to this, the breathing rate is increased. The respiratory muscles are activated and deep breathing is seen during such exercises. As a result, lung functionality and capacity are increased.

  2. Yoga and pranayama are effective in improving lung health. Different asanas that are effective on pulmonary health are, bhujangasana, ustrasana, matsyasana, urdhva dhanurasana and dhanurasana. These exercises induce deep breathing and diaphragmatic breathing. As a result, the lungs are expanded and their functionality is increased. Pranayama may increase inspiratory pressure and functionality of the respiratory muscles.

  3. Exercise like walking may also increase lung functionality. Nordic walking, a type of walking that involves total body interventions, may increase lung functionality and muscle strength.

  4. Traditional Chinese exercises like tai-chi, Qigong, Yijinjing, and Baduanjin are known to increase mind-body interventions. These exercises focus on breathing techniques. As a result, lung functionality is increased.

What Are the Effects of Physical Activity on Diseased Lungs?

The effectiveness of physical activity on diseased lungs are;

  1. Physical activity is effective in preventing mitochondrial damage. It is known that mitochondrial damage is a known factor for aging. metabolic changes are mainly caused by mitochondria damage. The mutation rate of mitochondria is much faster than the mutation of DNA. These mutations cause defective functioning of mitochondria. As a result, energy production is altered, and reactive oxygen species are produced. Thus regular physical activity may prevent age-related changes in the lung.

  2. Physical activity tends to reduce inflammatory actions. Reduction in the amount of inflammatory mediators leads to reduced oxidative stress. That is why, regular physical activity can prevent inflammatory damage to the lung tissues.

  3. Regular physical activity tends to reduce symptoms of lung disorders. Symptoms associated with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disorders, such as coughing, production of sputum, and breathlessness, are reduced.

Physical activities can improve physiological and psychological health. However, such activities are beneficial in improving lung health. Daily physical activity may reverse age-related lung changes. Also, the severity of symptoms related to several lung diseases is reduced by daily physical activity.
