Q&A

Answered by Dr. E. Venkata Ramana

My one year old son has been coughing for 3 days. Bromhexine and kofarest did not work. Please help.

Hi, Thank you for your query. For cough in a one year old child, the given medications by his paediatrician are sufficient. But before giving cough medication, I suggest you to take him for an examination by the doctor to look for any signs of throat infection and to examine his lungs to look for any abnormal sounds like wheezing. If the child is having any abnormal signs, he needs a cough syrup with bronchodilator such as salbutamol or terbutaline. Bronchodilators are given for bronchial muscles to relax. This helps in more air to reach the lungs easily which means better breathing.

Is passing stool 6 to 7 times normal for a 5-month-old baby?

Hello, Welcome to icliniq.com. Thank you for reaching out. Kindly tell me, is your kid on exclusive breastfeeding? If she takes exclusive breast feeds, there is nothing to worry about, and you can continue to give breast feeds frequently. If the stool frequency continues or is loose, you can give an oral probiotic after mixing in expressed milk for three to five days as prescribed by your paediatrician. If you are giving artificial feeds, be careful with sterilization, handling, and preparation of formula.

Baby placed with tracheostomy & gastronomy tube - doubt regarding aspiration

Hi, Welcome to icliniq.com. The aspiration of feeds is due to the presence of bulbar palsy and palate pharyngeal muscle incoordination. As per the doctor's advise, try to improve the nutrition of the child and weight. Once the child gains a proper weight, then decannulation (removing tracheostomy tube) can be planned depending on the child's fitness. Be in follow-up with the doctor.

My 5 year old kid has a lump on his neck. What to do?

Hi, Welcome to icliniq.com. Lump in the neck is due to an enlarged lymph node caused by an infection. If the node is enlarged, then a course of antibiotic has to be given after consulting a pediatrician. If it responds to the antibiotics, then nothing more is required. But if the lump is increasing in spite of antibiotics, then the following tests need to be done to know the type of pathology: CBC (complete blood count).

After 96 hours of phototherapy, my baby's bilirubin is fluctuating. What can be done?

Hi, Welcome to icliniq.com. Before advising you about the child, I need some information: What are the blood groups of baby and mother? What was the birth weight of the baby? Was the baby born at term or preterm? Bilirubin may fluctuate during the treatment with phototherapy and the level of bilirubin depends on the maturation of the liver. And the rate of production of bilirubin in the child depends on the cause of raised bilirubin. If there is any incompatibility of blood groups between the baby and the mother, the bilirubin may rise in spite of phototherapy. But nothing to worry as the level of bilirubin of 14 is not dangerous around this day of life in case of babies with normal birth weight.
