Is lower belly pain linked to bowel issues?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello, doctor,

There is a sensual pain near my navel, and that area is a little stiff; pressure needs to be exerted when I want to excrete my stool. It is from the last one or two weeks. No such issues were reported earlier.

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

A sensual (dull or tender) pain near your navel, along with stiffness and the need to strain during bowel movements, could point to a few common issues, such as constipation, mild intestinal bloating, or early signs of a gastrointestinal issue like a mild obstruction, hernia, or even a developing infection.

A few possible causes are:

  1. Constipation or slow bowel movement due to diet, dehydration, or inactivity.
  2. Gas buildup or bloating.
  3. Umbilical or incisional hernia (especially if the stiffness is localized and feels like a lump).
  4. Early appendicitis or intestinal inflammation (less likely if no fever or sharp pain).

Here is what you can do:

  1. Increase fiber intake (fruits, vegetables, whole grains).
  2. Stay well hydrated.
  3. Add a mild stool softener or fiber supplement (like psyllium husk).
  4. Avoid straining; it can worsen discomfort.
  5. Apply warm compresses to the area to relieve tension.

See a doctor if you experience the following:

  1. Pain becomes sharper or constant.
  2. You develop fever, nausea, or vomiting.
  3. There is blood in the stool or visible swelling near the navel.
  4. You feel no urge to pass gas or stool for more than two to three days.

Since this is a new and persistent issue, it is best to get a clinical exam and possibly an abdominal ultrasound to rule out a hernia or other structural concerns.

I hope you find this helpful.

Thank you.
