What could cause left abdominal pain that worsens before bowel movements?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a female, and my age is 25. For the past month, I have been experiencing pain to the left of my belly button, particularly when bending over or moving awkwardly. I underwent an abdominal ultrasound and had my ovaries scoped, but the results came back normal. Recently, I have noticed the pain occurring more frequently when I need to have a bowel movement, and it subsides after. The pain is intermittent, sometimes present for a day and disappearing for a week. Any insights would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Based on your medical history (attachments removed to protect the patient's identity), including issues like chronic constipation and abdominal pain, it is likely that your recent symptoms are due to gastrointestinal flora depletion, possibly triggered by overeating, leading to symptoms resembling gastroenteritis. I suggest continuing with VSL#3 or very specific lactic acid bacteria #3; it is a suitable probiotic. Additionally, I suggest to undergo a stool routine and microscopy test. If bacteria are detected, antibiotics may be prescribed, typically taking about five to seven days for the symptoms to resolve.

I suggest some general instructions, in addition to any medications prescribed by your gastroenterologist, to aid in your speedy recovery:

  1. Increase your intake of lukewarm water.

  2. Incorporate plenty of vegetables and yogurt into your diet.

  3. Consume fresh oranges and pears abundantly.

  4. Choose a low-fat diet.

  5. Include a variety of vegetables and fruits in your meals.

  6. Avoid packaged fruit juices.

  7. Have frequent, small meals instead of large ones.

  8. Space out your food intake every two hours with small portions.

  9. Stay well-hydrated.

  10. Consider adding ispaghula husk to your regimen.

I hope this helps.

Please revert to assist you further.

Thank you.
