What are the possible causes of left-sided abdominal fullness in a 31-year-old female?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 31-year-old female with an uncomfortable sensation on the left side of my stomach. I do not have pain, but the sensation is annoying. I only have it when I lie down. It feels like a fullness on the left side. My left side feels heavy, but if I lie on my right side, I do not have any problem. What does that mean?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Your symptoms are dragging my thoughts toward moderate splenomegaly. Patients with splenic enlargement in tropical malaria infection may have lumpy feelings in the left hypochondrium. Other possibilities include acute gastritis, abdominal gas, and left pleural effusion. Please consult your physician and get treated accordingly.

Take care.
