What causes the failure of the abortion pill?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I used an MTP kit for abortion, but the bleeding did not occur as expected. My last period was one month ago, and this month, my period did not arrive. So, I took a pregnancy test, which came back positive.

I took the first abortion pill, Mifepristone, followed by two Misoprostol pills. After taking Misoprostol, I experienced bleeding for four to five hours, but then it stopped. Yesterday, I took two more Misoprostol pills, but the bleeding has not started. What should I do?

Please guide me.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Possible reasons may be:

  1. Incomplete abortion: The abortion may not be fully complete, and retained pregnancy tissue could be preventing proper bleeding.
  2. Ectopic pregnancy: If you experience severe pain, dizziness, or weakness, this could indicate a serious condition requiring urgent medical attention.
  3. Ineffective medication: In some cases, the pills may not work as expected, and an alternative approach may be necessary.

What you should do:

  1. Seek medical help immediately: A doctor can perform an ultrasound to check if the abortion is complete.
  2. Avoid taking more pills without medical advice: Self-medicating can lead to complications.
  3. Monitor your symptoms: If you experience severe pain, fever, heavy bleeding, or weakness, go to a hospital immediately.

It is crucial to seek medical attention to ensure your health and safety.

I hope this information helps.

Thank you.
