Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I guess my husband has seen my left eye goes inward a lot and I can also notice it now. What could this be? I am worried about it.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com
From your description, I can say that you are suffering from esotropia (an inward deviation of eyes). And from the fact that your husband had to notice it, tells me that you do not have any other problems like double vision. So you may be suffering from accommodative esotropia. If in case you are having double vision, the cause for this most probably is a nerve palsy. At your age, there could be two main causes of accommodative esotropia. Have you recently had a fever or have any sleep deprivation or are you dieting? Such stresses and similar issues can cause the mechanisms which keep your eyes straight to not work to their fullest extent. This is the commonest cause that we see. Have got any blurred vision or pain on your eyebrows? If so, you may need glasses to correct your esotropia. A simple way to find out if you need glasses is to do a pinhole test. Take a piece of paper, poke a small hole through it with a pen tip and try to see letter or objects that are around 6 m or 20 feet away through the hole. If you are able to see things clearly through the hole than without it, it means you may need glasses. Wearing glasses of appropriate power helps to correct the problem in a majority of patients. There are no home remedies for this condition that are known to give good relief from symptoms, although reducing near work, getting adequate sleep and relaxation techniques may work. A visit to your optometrist, especially if you have symptoms of pain along your eyebrow or see better through a pinhole is advisable. If you do have double vision, seeing an ophthalmologist might be suitable.
