Should someone be concerned if they swallow a small quantity of nail polish remover?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I was using a nail polish remover to remove nail polish. It was lying next to my water bottle, and I accidentally grabbed the remover and put some of it in my mouth instead of water. I immediately spat it out and rinsed my mouth. Also, I brushed my teeth. However, I feel nauseous. It could just be paranoia. Will I be alright?

Please advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Nail polish contains many toxic substances like formaldehyde and toluene. The toxicity depends on the quantity swallowed. How much quantity have you swallowed? I recommend you drink plenty of water and fluids to dilute any swallowed amount. There is no need to go to the ER, but watch out for any developing symptoms. Is there any skin rash or distressed breathing, as the substances are highly allergic?

Please keep me updated for the next few hours.

Wish you good health.

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

Thank you.
