What are these not-so-deep scars around my cheeks?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 22-year-old male. I have problems with my face. I have a not-so-deep scar around my cheeks, and I think I always have breakouts.

What treatment should I use? I cannot consult a physical dermatologist because I do not have money. Can you help me?

Kindly assist.

Thank you.

Hello,

I have read your query, and thank you so much for sharing your concern.

To guide you properly, I would need a little more information about your skin condition.

  1. Could you please tell how long you have been experiencing these breakouts and scars?

  2. For example, did the acne start recently, or has it been present for several years?

It would also help to know whether you are still getting new pimples regularly or if the main concern now is the marks and scars left behind.

Meanwhile, I am suggesting you take care. First, try to wash your face twice daily with a gentle acne face wash. Cleansing helps remove excess oil, dirt, and bacteria that can clog pores and trigger new pimples. Avoid washing the face excessively or using harsh soaps, as this can irritate the skin and exacerbate breakouts.

Second, avoid picking or squeezing pimples, because this can increase inflammation and lead to more noticeable scars or dark marks after healing. Keeping your hands away from your face is very important for preventing further skin damage.

Please upload clear photographs of your face, especially the cheeks where the scars are present. Try to take the pictures in good natural light, without filters, including one close-up and one full-face image. This will help assess whether the marks are active acne, post-acne pigmentation, or mild acne scarring related to acne vulgaris (a chronic, inflammatory skin condition caused by clogged hair follicles due to excess oil (sebum) production, dead skin cells, and bacteria, often triggered by hormonal changes).

It would also be helpful if you could describe the type of breakouts you usually get. For example, do they appear as red painful pimples, whiteheads, or blackheads?

Please also mention whether your skin tends to be oily or if you frequently notice clogged pores, as this can influence the type of acne and the treatment approach.

Additionally, let me know if you have used any acne creams, face washes, or medications in the past, and whether they helped or caused irritation. Finally, try to describe the scars on your cheeks.

Do they appear mainly as dark marks left after pimples heal, small depressed pits in the skin, or raised areas?

These details will help determine whether the condition is mainly active acne vulgaris or post-acne scarring and guide the most suitable and affordable treatment options.

Once I can see the pictures and know the duration and type of lesions, I can suggest simple and affordable treatments that may help control acne and improve the appearance of scars.

I hope this answers your query.

Please let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you.
