Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had severe acne a few months ago, but it cleared up. Now, however, I have several acne scars on my face that have not disappeared even after months. Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Acne marks, also known as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), can take a long time to fade. However, there are several things you can do to help speed up process. Following are my suggestions:

  1. Sun protection: Sun exposure can make acne marks worse and delay the healing process. It is important to use broad-spectrum sunscreen even on cloudy days.
  2. Topical treatments: Over-the-counter topical treatments containing ingredients like Vitamin C, Niacinamide, and Retinol can help fade acne marks over time. These products work by increasing cell turnover and promoting collagen production.
  3. Chemical peels: Chemical peels use a solution to remove the outer layer of skin and reveal smoother, more even-toned skin underneath. This can help fade acne marks and improve the overall appearance of the skin.
  4. Laser therapy: Laser therapy uses focused light to target hyperpigmented areas and break up the excess melanin in the skin. This can help fade acne marks more quickly than other treatments.
  5. Time: Unfortunately, it can take several months or even up to a year for acne marks to fade completely. It is important to be patient and consistent with your skincare routine.
  6. It is also important to continue taking steps to prevent new acne breakouts, as new acne can cause new marks to form. This includes practicing good skincare habits, such as washing your face twice a day, avoiding picking or squeezing acne, and using non-comedogenic skincare and makeup products

I hope this helps.

Thank you and take care.
