Can I use multiple salicylic acid products at 19?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 19 years old, and I have sensitive, oily, acne-prone skin. I am using two percent Salicylic acid face wash, one percent Salicylic acid moisturizer, one percent Salicylic acid serum, and one percent Hyaluronic sunscreen.

Can I pair them together for a skin of my type?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and can understand your concern.

I appreciate your effort for good skin care. At 19 years of age, with sensitive, oily, acne-prone skin, you need to be a little careful with how much salicylic acid you use, because overuse can easily lead to irritation, dryness, redness, or worsening sensitivity, even if your skin is oily. The products you mentioned are all acne-focused, but using them all together is too harsh, especially on sensitive teenage skin.

Using a 2% salicylic acid face wash is fine, but it should be used only once daily, preferably at night, not twice a day. Salicylic acid cleansers are effective at unclogging pores, but using them too frequently can damage the skin barrier and cause reverse acne.

I would not recommend pairing this with a two percent salicylic acid serum for daily use at your age, because that would mean layering multiple salicylic acid products, which significantly increases the risk of irritation and rebound acne.

The 1% salicylic acid moisturizer also adds another exfoliating layer. When combined with a salicylic acid face wash and serum, this becomes excessive. For sensitive skin, it is best to have only one salicylic acid product in your routine, not two or three. Among the options you listed, the face wash alone is enough to control oil and mild acne at this stage.

The one percent Hyaluronic sunscreen is safe and appropriate for your age and skin type. Hyaluronic acid helps hydrate without leaving the skin greasy, and sunscreen is essential when using any exfoliating or acne-control product. You can use it every day.

Keep your routine simple and gentle. Use the Salicylic acid face wash once daily, follow it with a gentle moisturizer (without acids), and apply the Hyaluronic sunscreen every morning.

If you have any concerns, such as hyperpigmentation, active acne, or marks, feel free to let me know so I can guide you and recommend an effective medicated topical as an additional step in your skin care routine. Otherwise, these three steps are fine at your age to get healthy, growing skin.

I hope this answers your query.

Please let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you.
