What skincare routine can help me get clear skin?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have acne marks and want to clear my skin. A few months ago, I had severe acne, and salicylic acid products did not work. Then a dermatologist suggested benzoyl peroxide and a medicated shampoo.

After five to six months, my acne has healed, but I do not know how to treat the marks left behind.

Can you please suggest a skincare routine and suitable products?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com

I have read your query and understand your concern.

It is good to hear that your active acne has improved. What you are noticing now are likely post-acne marks, which are common after acne heals and may take time to fade. These marks are due to skin discoloration from previous inflammation and not active acne.

With a consistent skincare routine, these marks can gradually improve over weeks to months.

Here is a simple routine you can follow:

  • In the morning, use a gentle face wash, followed by a suitable moisturizer. Then apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF (sun protection factor) 50. Sun protection is very important as it helps lighten existing marks and prevents further pigmentation.

  • In the evening, apply Adapalene gel (topical retinoid) at bedtime. Use a pea-sized amount for the entire face and apply it gently. You can use a moisturizer along with it to reduce dryness. This helps in skin renewal and improves marks over time.

  • On alternate nights, use Azelaic acid (Dicarboxylic acids) 10 % cream in a similar pea-sized amount, followed by a moisturizer. This helps reduce pigmentation and improve skin tone. Alternate between these treatments to avoid irritation.

  • Continue this routine for at least four to six weeks to notice visible improvement. Avoid scratching the skin or using harsh products.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.

Thank you.
