Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
I had an iron infusion four weeks ago, and my urine was dark for over a week. My recheck bloodwork showed my anemia had worsened, but my iron levels increased to just above the lower range limit. Can I get a new iron infusion with a different medicine?
Thanks.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I can understand your concern.
Based on your history, it is possible that the dark urine after the infusion was a temporary side effect, but the fact that your hemoglobin dropped while your iron stores only increased slightly suggests that your body may not have fully responded to the specific iron formulation or infusion rate used.
Yes, you can receive another iron infusion with a different preparation, such as Iron sucrose (Venofer) or Ferric carboxymaltose (Injectafer), which are often better tolerated and given in slower, divided doses to improve absorption and reduce side effects.
Before the next infusion, it is important to review a complete set of laboratory tests, including CBC (complete blood count), ferritin, transferrin saturation, B12, folate, and possibly reticulocyte count to confirm the degree and type of anemia, and to rule out other causes such as blood loss or malabsorption.
Please discuss with your treating physician about switching to a slower-infused or alternative iron formula, as they can prescribe the most appropriate option and determine the dosing schedule. Let me know if you develop chest pain, shortness of breath, severe fatigue, or black stools, as those require urgent evaluation.
I hope this information is helpful to you.
Thank you.
