Why is a skin infection on one finger spreading to others?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 58-year-old male with a skin infection. A few months ago, I was treated with Itraconazole. At that time, the affected area appeared to heal, but recently, I noticed that the wound looked irritated again. Two days ago, I observed pus coming from it, and now another finger seems to be affected. I’m also experiencing pain and mild swelling in one of the fingers. I have just started taking antibiotics.

Please suggest.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and can understand your concern.

It sounds like you are going through a tough time with this skin infection, and I am genuinely sorry you are dealing with this. From what you have described, the infection had settled for a while after you took Itraconazole, which is often used for fungal infections. But now it has flared up again with pus formation and possibly spreading to another finger. This suggests there could be a secondary bacterial infection, or the original infection was not completely resolved.

At your age, especially if there are any underlying conditions like diabetes or immune issues, skin infections can sometimes behave unpredictably and may need a more thorough approach. It is good that you have started taking antibiotics, but I encourage you to continue monitoring your affected area. If the swelling, redness, or pus increases or you develop a fever or pain, please do not wait to seek medical care.

You might need a wound culture to identify (bacterial, fungal, or mixed), so the proper medication can be given. Also, try to keep the area clean and dry, and avoid scratching or covering it with tight dressings unless advised by a doctor. Please do not ignore it. Recurrent infections like this deserve proper attention. You have taken a good step by restarting treatment, and with a little more care and guidance, you will be on the road to healing soon.

I hope this answers your query.

Let me know if I need to assist you further.

Thank you.
