What are non-hormonal treatment options for adenomyosis?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I suspect that I may have adenomyosis. I previously underwent a surgical procedure in which my gynecologist performed a cleaning procedure and inserted a Mirena IUD. I was diagnosed with PCOS, but the only treatment I have received is Metformin. I am curious to know if there are any alternative treatments or potential cures available for my condition.

Please clarify.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Regarding your condition, the Mirena IUD is indeed one of the treatment options for adenomyosis, and it can be effective in reducing heavy bleeding and relieving certain symptoms. But its effectiveness may vary from person to person.

Other potential treatments for adenomyosis include:

  1. Hormonal therapy: This may involve using birth control pills, GnRH (Gonadotropin-releasing hormone) agonists, or progesterone-only therapy to manage symptoms.
  2. Pain management: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or other pain medications can help ease discomfort.
  3. Endometrial ablation: This procedure removes the lining of the uterus, which can reduce menstrual bleeding and pain.
  4. Hysterectomy: In severe cases or when fertility is no longer a concern, a hysterectomy (surgical removal of the uterus) may be recommended.

It would be helpful if you could share any previous ultrasound reports with me.

I hope this information has been useful.

Thank you.
