Why does a 43-year-old with ADHD interrupt people?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 43, and I have ADHD. I recently realized that my ADHD is affecting my conversations. I tend to interrupt other people when they are speaking. I have no intention of interrupting or invading another person's space, but I do not understand why I keep doing it. Why does a 43-year-old with ADHD interrupt people without meaning to?

I do not want to be rude, but the words just spill out. Later, I feel guilty and embarrassed. This is affecting both my work and my relationships.

  1. Is this due to impulsivity or anxiety?

  2. Can therapy actually help control this, or is it something I will have to manage for life?

I notice it gets worse when I am stressed or tired. People think I am not listening, even though I am trying very hard. I am worried this habit will permanently damage my professional image.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have gone through your query and understand your concern.

Thank you for reaching out to me.

It is difficult to manage ADHD (attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, a neurodevelopmental disorder) symptoms, but at this age, I am a little bit guarded about making the diagnosis of ADHD. I think you should have it reviewed.

These are common symptoms of ADHD, and this is called impulsivity, where sudden words pop out. Similarly, impulsivity spans across other domains as well.

There are specific strategies that you can use to manage these symptoms. One is to take medicines, such as stimulants, and other behavioral therapies are also available. There is a therapy called CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) and the stop, think, act therapy. You can easily use it and learn from online resources.

While this is anxiety-provoking, it is part of your disorder. This is similar to physical disorders, and therefore, there is no fault of yours.

You can talk to a therapist if you are feeling low, losing interest, or if your anxiety is overwhelming you. There are certain other relaxation techniques you can use, such as deep breathing. It works slowly and gradually, but it works.

ADHD may seem difficult, but it is a manageable condition. The good news is that it improves with advancing age, especially impulsivity and hyperactivity.

For attention deficit, you can break work into manageable chunks, use mobile reminders, and work in a quiet room.

Last but not least, ADHD often co-occurs with anxiety. Therefore, you can also consult a doctor for an anxiety disorder.

I hope I have answered your question.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you.
