Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I have been sneezing nonstop for weeks, and my nose is constantly blocked. I have allergic rhinitis, but this time it is worse than usual. I am currently breastfeeding my four-month-old infant, and I am not sure what medications are safe to take. My sleep is disturbed, and I am always exhausted.
Could this condition be worsened by postpartum hormonal shifts? I also worry that my baby might inherit these allergies. Can breastfeeding mothers take antihistamines safely? Is allergic rhinitis worse during the postpartum period due to hormonal changes?
Please help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and understood your concern.
I completely understand how overwhelming this situation must feel. Here is the list of safe allergic rhinitis medications for breastfeeding mothers:
Antihistamines: Some antihistamines, such as Loratadine and Cetirizine, are considered safe for breastfeeding mothers. However, it is essential to consult your healthcare provider before taking any medication.
Nasal sprays: Certain nasal sprays, such as cromolyn sodium, may be safe for breastfeeding mothers.
For reducing allergy symptoms, I suggest you follow this:
Avoid triggers: Identify and avoid allergens that trigger your symptoms.
Nasal saline irrigation: Use saline nasal sprays or rinses to help clear nasal passages.
Humidifiers: Use a humidifier to maintain a healthy indoor environment.
Inheritance of allergies can be due to genetic predisposition. If you or your partner has allergies, your baby may be more likely to develop allergies. Breastfeeding can help promote a healthy gut microbiome and may potentially reduce the risk of allergies in infants.
I hope this helps.
Kindly follow up if you have more doubts.
Thank you.
