What is the treatment for amyloidosis?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am concerned about my brother’s health. He is 47 years old, and he is experiencing severe swelling in his legs, tiredness, and weakness. When we checked with the doctor, it was diagnosed as amyloidosis, and we were shocked to know this. I wanted to know more about it.

  1. Is this dangerous?

  2. Can this be cured?

  3. What are the medications available to treat this?

  4. Can he recover completely from this?

  5. Does this spread to others or his kids?

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Amyloidosis is a serious condition where abnormal proteins build up in tissues and organs, affecting their function.

It can be life-threatening when it affects vital organs like the heart, kidneys, liver, or nervous system.

There is no cure, but treatments can manage symptoms and slow disease progression.

Treatment depends from case to case upon a physical examination.

  1. Chemotherapy.

  2. Stem cell transplant.

  3. Symptomatic treatment.

Amyloidosis is not contagious and does not spread from person to person. Hereditary amyloidosis is genetic.

Regular follow-ups with a hematologist, a healthy diet, and exercise will help.

I hope I have answered your question.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards.
