Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
A few days ago, I experienced itching in my anal area. I took a deworming treatment, but the itching seems to have increased. Initially, it only occurred at night, but now it happens during the day as well.
Please guide.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and understand your concern.
A single dose of Albendazole (worm drug) may not effectively clear all pinworms or their eggs, leading to persistent irritation. Additionally, the medication can sometimes cause temporary skin sensitivity.
Often, a second dose of deworming medicine is necessary after two weeks, so consulting your doctor before taking another pill is essential.
To address your issue, it is advisable to see a doctor for a "scotch tape test" to check for pinworm eggs. Conducting a scotch tape test involves pressing clear cellophane tape against the anal skin first thing in the morning, before washing, and bringing it to a laboratory for analysis under a microscope.
All household members should be treated simultaneously to prevent reinfection. It is also essential to maintain good hygiene by washing your hands frequently, keeping your nails short, showering every morning, and washing all bedding and underwear in hot water.
As a treatment plan, a repeat dose of Albendazole is typically recommended after two weeks. All household contacts should be treated simultaneously, and topical care with soothing barrier creams, such as zinc oxide, can help protect the skin and reduce itching.
Over-the-counter Hydrocortisone cream (1%) may also be used for a few days to alleviate inflammation and itching.
I hope I have addressed all your questions. If there is anything else, please let me know.
Thank you.
