Does Anastrozole affect monitored anesthesia care?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Would tablet Anastrozole 1mg per week affect monitored anesthesia care (MAC)? I am a 59-year-old male, with a height of five feet and eight inches, and a weight of 150 lbs. I am in good health.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

I hope you are in good health. Regarding your query, you have not mentioned why would you require monitored anesthesia care (MAC). Still mentioning some of the concerns.

Tablet Anastrozole (nonsteroidal aromatase inhibitor) is an aromatase inhibitor used in some types of breast cancers. It inhibits the conversion of testosterone into estradiol, which affects the brain's sleep-wake cycle. In this manner, it decreases sensitivity to anesthetic agents to some extent.

Secondly, it may cause insulin resistance and precipitation of diabetes. High sugar levels in the perioperative period may lead to complications related to wound healing. Other side effects of the tablet Anastrozole(nonsteroidal aromatase inhibitor) are an increased risk of cardiac events, pulmonary embolism, stroke, joint pains, etc.

As far as the use of the tablet Anastrazole is concerned, the current recommendation says you should continue drugs in the perioperative period keeping in mind above mentioned concerns.

Kindly consult a specialist doctor, talk with them, and take medications with their consent.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
